Zentangle Skulls

  • Open your zentangle skull in Photoshop

  • Adjust the settings so that it is has a lot of contrast without losing detail (see below for some techniques to try)
    • You can go to Adjustments—>Brightness/Contrast
    • Adjustments—>Exposure (decrease the offset)
    • Adjustments—>Threshold

  • Change the format to PNG
  • Open your file in Illustrator
  • Make sure your image is selected (it will have a blue box around it)

  • Click on the triangle located between the Image Trace and Mask options

  • Select Default from the drop down menu
  • If it starts to take a long time or if your file is super large you can rasterize it

  • Go to Object—>Expand

  • Make sure Object and Fill are checked

  • Press OK

  • Zoom in to see all the detail (command plus)
  • Create a color palette (refer to the Creating a Color Palette in Illustrator post)
  • Press K on the keyboard for the Live Paint Bucket Tool

  • Select a color and begin to fill in colors for the skull
